The Sheikh Khalifa International Stadium in Al Ain, UAE, is a multipurpose sports venue with a primary use of holding soccer matches. With seating for 16,000, the stadium features a 7500 m² membrane structure above the grandstands to provide shade. The open design allows for natural ventilation, with the membrane positioned to provide adequate shading as the sunlight changes direction. Tensile Evolution’s Horst Dürr* was integral to the membrane application process, teaming up with Mero space frame building systems to install the membrane roof. With such a vast and complex framework Horst’s engineering ensured adequate membrane strength and durability without jeopardizing the existing space frame. The finished product is high performing and a testament to the versatility of membrane application techniques on an existing structure.
