The Arena da Amazônia was a host venue of the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a design that is both visually arresting and a remarkable example of sustainability. Tensile Evolution’s Horst Dürr* in collaboration with partner engineers, developed the membrane installation method and one-of-a-kind tensioning mechanism that allowed the membrane to be installed and then tightened afterword.

The membrane façade was an important part of the stadium’s iconic look and overall success. The design was inspired by indigenous basket weaving tradition, creating a true symbol for native pride that reflects the theme of sustainability. The stadium complies with FIFA’s latest environmental standards, achieving LEED Silver, and represents a major step forward for a country focused on their future with an eye for their cultural past.
