As host of the 2015 European Games, the city of Baku wanted an arena that was visually arresting and represented the cultural importance of gymnastics in Azerbaijan. Tensile Evolution’s Horst Dürr* was tasked with designing a façade that fit the project’s aspiration for a modern, dynamic visual element and represented the sport of gymnastics.

The solution was to create undulating ribbons that circumscribe the stadium, and the result indeed resembles a ribbon twirling around a gymnast. The need for flat membranes with a consistent width yet randomized undulation required a multi-discipline approach, resulting in an elegant solution that our clients and the community are proud of.
